Bevor es Bratmobile in der Dreier-Besetzung gibt, machen Molly Neuman und Allison Wolfe zu zweit Musik und bringen ein Zine raus: Girl Germs.
Im Frühjahr 1991 fahren die beiden Studentinnen aus Oregon nach Washington und treffen da Jen Smith und Christina Billotte. Mit ihnen nehmen sie ein erstes Tape auf "Bratmobile DC". Damit gehört die Band neben Bikini Kill zu den ersten Bands der Riot Grrrl Szene.
Im Sommer treffen Allison und Molly die Gitarristin Erin Smith wieder, die sie schon im Winter kennengelernt hatten. Im Juli 1991 spielen die drei ihre erste Show zusammen: Molly Neuman an den Drums, Erin Smith an der Gitarre und Allison Wolfe am Mikro. Ein Jahr später bringen Bratmobile ihre erste 7" raus: "Kiss and Ride," das erste Album, "Pottymouth", erscheint 1993.
1994 trennen sich Bratmobile während eines Auftritts. Gründe sind wohl die Konflikte innerhalb der Riot Grrrl-Szene und der mediale Druck.
1999 gibt es eine Reunion und Bratmobile gehen mit Sleater-Kinney auf Tour. Bis 2004 sind die Mädels noch gemeinsam unterwegs und bringen zwei Alben raus. Beide erscheinen auf "Lookout! Records", welches Molly Neuman in der Zwischenzeit gegründet hat. Im Januar '04 schreibt Allison Wolfe auf dem Messageboard von Bratmobile:
"Yeah, sorry to say i think Bratmobile is through. We never had a certain incident where anyone said "I quit" or whatever, so it's been vague and drawn out. Sorry if that's been confusing to people. I think all 3 of us just have different ways of doing things and different things we want to do now, in and outside of music. Molly has just been so busy with managing the Donnas and the Locust, and as co-owner of Lookout! Records. Erin is also working full time at Lookout! Records. I've been living across the country in Washington DC, working 2 part-time jobs, and now doing other musical things. I'm now in Hawnay Troof, Baby Truth, and also a new girl band in DC called Partyline."
